Why China? Why Israel?
As part of the academic requirements of the Asian Studies Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Israeli and Chinese students are required to submit an end-of-semester paper titled: "Why China? Why Israel?", In which the Chinese students are asked to explain their motivation for choosing to study Judaism and Israel studies in Israel, and the Israelis are asked why they chose to learn the Chinese language and culture. "The answers we received from both groups were heartwarming," shares Dr. Danielle Gurevitch, Head of the Multidisciplinary Studies Department at BIU’s Faculty of Humanities. "In the spirit of The Sir Naim Dangoor program for Universal Monotheism we decided to share these answers with the community." Six of the program’s 20 students were chosen to give short presentation at Ben-Gurion High School (in Petach-Tikva), near BIU’s campus in Ramat Gan, ranked among the top five high schools in Israel. The students met with the school principal, talked to the teachers, toured the school campus and spoke with high schoolers, who were riveted to meet and talk to international students. The Chinese students were impressed by the openness of the Israeli teens and even more so, from the Israeli education system. "Schools in China are exceptionally disciplined and require absolute obedience. The student's daily schedule is almost military-like, from 7 AM until 10 PM, 6 days a week. The students’ personal interests and preferences are of no consequence in China, whereas here high schoolers have a choice of courses and study tracks, all offered in a welcoming and cultivating learning environment. For the Chinese students, this was a staggering revelation.." The BIU delegation was introduced to several study tracks such as cyber security, science labs and communication, as well as the school's Radio station studio. A fascinating and exciting day that showcased Israel’s investment in its future generation’s education.
למה סין? למה ישראל?
במסגרת לימודיהם בלימודי אסיה של הפקולטה למדעי הרוח נדרשו הסטודנטים הישראלים והסינים להגיש עבודת סוף סמסטר בנושא: "למה סין? למה ישראל?" ובו הסינים נדרשו להסביר את הטעמים שהביאו אותם לבחור בישראל וביהדות כמושא לימודיהם לתואר והישראלים את המקבילה, מדוע בחרו בשפה ובתרבות סין כיעד. "התשובות שענו שני הצדדים חיממו לנו את הלב" מסבירה ד"ר דניאלה גורביץ', ראש הרב תחומי במדעי הרוח "וברוח פעילות תכנית דנגור החלטנו לשלב את הקהילה במסקנות אליהם הגיעו." הסטודנטים הוזמנו להציג סדרת הרצאות בפני תלמידי תיכון בן גוריון בפתח תקווה, שמדורג בין חמשת בתי הספר הטובים בארץ, ובאותה הזדמנות גם נפגשו עם מנהלת בית בספר, צוות המורים, ערכו סיור הכרות במגמות הלימוד ושוחחו עם תלמידים. "הסינים מאד הופתעו משיטת החינוך הישראלית, לגלות סביבת לימודים תומכת ומכילה" מסבירה ד"ר מיכל זלצד-לביד וראש מסלול אסיה ברב תחומי "בבתי ספר בסין יש משמעת ברזל וחובת ציות מוחלטת של התלמידים. סדר היום של תלמיד סיני דומה יותר לטירונות ומתחילה מ7 בבוקר ונמשכת עד 10 בלילה. לרצונותיו של התלמיד והעדפותיו יש חשיבות נמוכה מאד. ואלו כאן, הם גילו אפשרויות בחירה מגוונות מאד במגמות הלימוד, תלמידים שמשוחחים בחופשיות ובנינוחות עם המורים. חוויה חדשה לחלוטין עבורם". הסטודנטים טיילו בין מגמות הלימוד השונות, סייבר, מעבדות ומגמת רדיו ושוחחו עם התלמידים שגילו באורחים עניין רב. יום מרתק וחווייתי שהציג בגאווה את דור העתיד של ישראל ופנים יפות של מערכת החינוך.
